Collectivity and Individuality
A key question in the analysis of long term cultural influences in South-
Western modernity, which is narrowed down to individuality and rationality, stands in contrast to these viewpoints. The resulting possible conflict leads to the conclusion that a personal cultural heritage either has to be preserved or overcome depending on the location. The traditions of Orthodox Christianity led to shared common social ideals and aspirations, which were opposed to western individuality. The main goal of the dissertations dealing with this specific topic is to show and deduce the cultural overall effect and historical dimension of this gulf between collectivity and individuality. Furthermore strategies will be worked out, with which European orientations can be brought into balance with the preservation of specific cultural identities.
These objectives will help to set the culture studies foundation for the other two areas of research.
